- 4/16/23Per my son, "It doesn't seem like they've cut a black person's hair before."
For reference, he had a short afro before going in for a summer cut. He'd preferably get a fade, a 2 going to 1, something I've had no problem doing at home, even when his hair was this long. They have no problem doing this on white people's hair, from what I myself witnessed with other customers.
Instead, the stylist kept making comments about his hair "dreading up" (his hair was combed just before) and insisted on shampooing before cutting.
If you know anything about black hair, you don't shampoo it as often as white hair, something I'd expect a stylist to know.
She then cut it terribly uneven, and with zero fade.
While I--not a professional-- can do this just fine.
I really regret paying for this haircut.
Further, I've worked in the service industry for much of my adult life, and my standard tip is 25%. The stylist earned every bit of a tip of $0.
DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU'RE BLACK
Do better, Hair Cuttery Harrisonburg. In a diverse little city, you need to be able to cut a wide range of hair types.

Hair Cuttery Team - 2/26/23AMAZING SERVICE, but the building and studio desperately needs an update. I am a repeat customer. Kate is amazing. She cuts and colors my hair, my husband's, and my best friend's. I only wish that their studio felt as nice as their service. The studio is very clean but looks very dated and more than a little tired. Counters are chipped, drawers don't close, paint is old and worn, and the front counter is obviously original and rundown really killing the first impressions. If this is their level of work with a tired studio, just imagine if they had a renovated studio that really reflected their skill. Hair Cuttery competes with independent salons in town that advertise themselves as luxury and holds their own, but because it looks and feels like an old strip mall salon that hasn't been updated since it was built, I feel like they're missing out on a lot of business in favor of somewhere that looks nicer. Give these people a salon to be proud of where customers feel pampered and match the skill and dedication of your stylists. As a customer with a demanding job and a child, I don't get to pamper myself often. While a hair cut on occasion is a necessity, I want to feel like it's a mini vacation, especially when I spend two hours there for color. I do not feel that way at Hair Cuttery. Please consider updating their salon. Hair Cuttery Team. - 2/4/23Was in need of a haircut but had no time to make an appointment. Went to 4 other establishments that advertised walk-ins welcome and was turned away from them all. Did a web search and found Hair Cuttery. Walked in expecting the same “no availability” response but was super surprised when they could cut my hair! I was immediately taken care of by Emily and I can say I WILL be seeing her again! She did exactly what I asked and I feel amazing with my “new do”!! Hair Cuttery Team - 4/23/22I have loved coming here until today. I bring my daughters in for haircuts and they get the same thing every time.Neither one was shampooed at first when every signature cut comes with it and I mentioned it when asked if they were getting a blow dry and style. My oldest gets her haircut after being in a ponytail and then she was shampooed and cut again. Her hair is uneven and the layers look awful. My youngest never got a shampoo and her hair gets shaved underneath and spots weren’t shaved. This is not okay and if this is how this place is going then we won’t be back. Hair Cuttery Team - 2/12/22Went in today as a walk in, which by the way your website states walk-ins are available. Stood there for 10 minutes with my daughter as no one acknowledged my presence (but they all looked at me when I walked in) until a Caucasian women with her daughter walked in. Then just to tell me they cannot give me a hair cut until 5pm, mind you it was only 1:45 pm. I have been coming to this location for over 15 years. If you are not going to staff stylists for walk-ins don’t advertise it. I drove 45 minutes to have waited rudely to be acknowledged then have no one available until 5 pm. Hair Cuttery Team. - 7/3/21"Wally" was the lady that cut my hair & she did a horrible job!! It's not at all what I asked for...I just needed a trim & to have my layers trimmed shorter. She wacked my hair off & has no clue how to do layers. So uneven & the hair just has these random short spots...doesn't look like layers. Looks like she kept making mistakes & wasn't able to hide it in the length of my hair. It doesn't blend at all!! She cut it way too short so I can't even get someone else to fix it!! I've been there multiple times & was always satisfied but I will NEVER let Wally touch my hair again! The sad thing is I couldn't tell how w bad it was while I was there because her mirror was so dirty & had so many water spots all over it that I couldn't really see my reflection. I even told her how dirty the mirror was & that I couldn't really see if the cut was ok. - 3/6/21Treated my mom terribly. Mom is in a wheelchair and it takes a bit for her to stand up and sit down. They belittled her in front of everyone and told her she’d have to have a sitter with her the entire time and then they stopped speaking to her like she wasn’t sitting there and was incapable of taking. - 11/28/20I made an appointment to have my hair blended. I got the impression that there was a misunderstanding about what I wanted done. That would have been okay if someone could have explained that to me directly. Instead I sat in the chair while there was discussion in the front foyer. Someone was on the phone, then called my stylist to the front. Then they called another stylist and another stylist. From where I was sitting it looked and sounded like they were trying to decide to tell me that they couldn't do what I asked. I heard someone say 'tell her' and 'an emergency.' At this point I thought they would tell me that they couldn't do what I wanted but the stylist said she couldn't do my hair at all. She stated she would have but the 'boss' said they couldn't. I was upset because of the fact that 'an emergency' was the only excuse I was given and there was a conference before that to decide what to tell me. Also I made an appointment and drove over twenty minutes to get there and was excited to have my hair done for the first time since March. If there were other reasons than be honest. I was in tears on the way home because of the way I was treated. If there was a misunderstanding say so.
- 9/16/20I came in for a trim and the woman who cut my hair did amazing - she straightened my bangs & didn't take too much off! It's no longer shedding like it was and it's now in a super cute bob. I wish I remembered her name, but she said she's been working for 27yrs! I've had bad experiences with Hair Cuttery's down the mountain, so I may just make the drive back up if I'm in need of a trim again. Thank you!

- 11/6/19I went in for a blow out which I LOVE from any technician and got a trim. I am from NYC. Jordan was professional and best hair cut I have had in 3 years.
- 11/1/18Horrible Mangment! Both of them lack respect and only want to boss the girls around. The prices are way to expensive for what you get. And The whole corporation is very greedy. Not worth the money go some place else.
